The University of Chicago Press History

The subject's defining work is appropriately entitled The History of Cartography This is a multi-volumed series of which three of the projected six volumes have been published. It is both a work of reference (comprehensive in coverage and rich in bibliographies, illustrations and other reader aids) and of scholarly interpretation (authoritative, factually up-to-date, revisionist and espousing deliberately broad terms of reference).

In 2011, the University of Chicago Press - in a magnanimous gesture to all potential readers - placed the first two volumes (i.e. four books) Online, with a separate PDF for each chapter. Their entire text can be searched simultaneously.

In 2013, the whole of the vast Volume 3 was placed online as well: Part 1 and Part 2.

In 2018, Volume 6 was placed Online

In 2021-2022, the first three volumes were translated into Chinese as 'The History of Cartography' in Chinese and published by the Social Sciences Academic Press (Beijing).

In July 2023, Volume 4 was placed Online
